Student Stewardship Program The Freshwater Trust
The Freshwater Trust's Student Stewardship Program provide students with the opportunity to become truly engaged in the maintenance and preservation of their local watershed. Project ideas are student driven and address local issues related to watershed health. Students participate in place-based, service learning projects ranging from scientific investigations to creative arts explorations. Students have opportunities to present their findings and share their creations with their peers and communities through The Freshwater Trust publications, StreamWebs, student summits and local events.
Specific objectives of Student Stewardship Program include:
• Connect students to their home rivers and streams;
• Engage students in all phases of community-based restoration project planning and implementation;
• Utilize an interdisciplinary approach thus providing multiple ways for students to learn about stream health;
• Work with local watershed councils and natural resource partners to accomplish authentic restoration project goals;
• Support and facilitate student presentations to the wider community through an annual Watershed Summit; and
• Create ongoing opportunities for students to foster a stewardship ethic and continue to participate in project monitoring, maintenance, and outreach.
The Student Stewardship Program model is built on a comprehensive 10 step process that guides students through the development of their own unique project, meeting both ecological and educational needs. Each project varies in length, duration and type, but typically includes multi-day in class and field research.
