Outdoor School Multnomah ESD Outdoor School
Outdoor School's mission is to teach field-based science concepts as they relate to natural resources. This instruction is hands-on and meaningful for real life. The program serves approximately 7,000 sixth-graders per year. Additionally, approximately 1,900 high school students are selected and trained each year to serve as student leaders at ODS sites. Competent instructional staff are also employed to ensure a rich, 24-hour, living experience where, without interruption, sixth-graders and their teachers can explore forest, streams, and fields.
Students attend with their classmates for a week-long, residential experience. High school students volunteer to teach field study activities and lead cabin groups under the supervision of Outdoor School staff members.
Participating teachers complete a multi-page written evaluation of all aspects of the program. A pre- and post-test has been administered to students to gauge content knowledge and attitudes. Participating high school students evaluate staff members and the program. School district superintendents evaluate effectiveness and value of the program for agency annual reports.
