Offered through OSU Extended Campus, Environmental Interpretation explores interpretation as an effective communication strategy. We introduce communication tools & techniques applicable to a variety of disciplines – including natural and cultural resource management – and useful in engaging visitors to nature centers, parks, museums, and historic sites.

You’ll develop effective presentations, craft interpretive displays & publications, and discover the important role evaluation plays in program development. You will also learn about employment and internship opportunities available through various natural resource agencies.

Description of Audience Evaluation Mechanism: 

Students will evaluate the course via an S.E.T. (Student Evaluation of Teaching) process, in addition to assessment questions asked at course conclusion via the FOR 493/593 Blackboard site.

Educational Objectives: 

• Students will understand how interpretation utilizes oral, visual and written techniques to enhance the visitor experience. Learning will be assessed through evaluation of thematic oral presentations, interpretive writing assignments, and designed interpretive displays.
• Students will learn how to identify information needs by completing a front-end audience assessment assignment and planning model critique.
• Students will learn about and understand the importance of adapting information to meet the needs of various audiences (age levels). This will be assessed through completion of an audience interaction activity.
• Students will understand the vital role that evaluation plays in interpretive design. Learning will be assessed as students gather feedback from peers via front-end, formative, and summative evaluation, and then use the feedback to development effective interpretive products.
