Ecology in Classrooms & Outdoors Ecology in Classrooms & Outdoors
ECO Scientists in Residence present a series of hands-on ecology lessons and facilitates service-learning projects for students K-6 grades. Programs available in northern Willamette Valley, and Columbia Gorge (Oregon & Washington).
Ecology in Classrooms & Outdoors (ECO) provides two Scientists in Residence to present a series of hands-on ecology lessons in elementary school classrooms. Lessons are aligned with state educational standards and learning targets. Often, programs include a service-learning project. Service-learning projects are student-driven and have included such activities as habitat restoration, creation of a native plant habitat, outdoor classrooms, invasive removal - on school grounds and at sites nearby schools.
Students take pre- and post- surveys focused on grade-level appropriate ecological knowledge, and general attitudes towards science and environmental health.
Teachers fill out surveys at the end of each program to provide feedback on the value of the program in their classrooms.
ECO aims to connect students to the world around them, and encourage students to develop an affinity for ecology that will remain with them as they grow into responsible, decision-making adults.
Service-learning projects are designed to improve school grounds, enhance watersheds, and strengthen environmental health.
Program costs vary depending on the number of participating classes and number of lessons presented. A program including six 45-minute lessons for ten 3-6 grade classrooms (60 lessons) will average $6,500. Often, programs are paid for by a combination of PTA funds, grant funds (typically secured by ECO grant writers), and student body funds.
