Siskiyou Field Institute

Introduction:

The Siskiyou Field Institute, based at the Deer Creek Center, began in 1997 as a non-profit organization in one of the most diverse and sensitve bioregions in the world. Institute instructors, staff and volunteers work hard and have fun introducing the wonders of the outdoors to adults and youth through hands-on experiences. Mushrooms to meadowlarks, cedars to serpentine, the marvels of the Klamath-Siskiyous are many. Home to carnivorous cobra lilies, harsh geology, marble halls and mythical creatures, the region evokes a deep appreciation for the natural world. The Institute invites learners of all ages to come on their own, with a friend or with the entire family to join scientists and naturalists in educational adventures throughout Southern Oregon and Northern California.

Mission Statement:

To deepen people's scientific understanding and intimate connection to the Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion by providing educational programs and dynamic outdoor experiences to a broad spectrum of the public.

Description:

The Deer Creek Center (DCC), now used for field research, education and retreats, was originally the Deer Creek Ranch, and was well known locally as one of John Wayne's favorite getaways. The ranch's original one room cabin, builit in 1928, has evolved into a spacious center of operations. Spanning more than 850 acres, DCC is an excellent place to relax, reinvigorate and learn. The property is situated at the gateway to the Illinois River Canyon. Here you can camp under the clear night sky, stay in a cozy yurt, bunk in the dormitory, or treat yourself to one of the center's private rooms. Nestled in the Klamath-Siskiyou Mountains where hiking trails, rivers and streams are abundant, the Deer Creek Center is a short drive away from the Oregon Caves National Monumnent, Kalmiopsis Wilderness, majestic redwoods and ocean beaches.
